University students to get $35 tablet in 2011

University students to get $35 tablet in 2011

Indian HRD Ministry's $35-tablet PC initiative is on track for its expected launch next year. What's more, HCL Technologies has reportedly bagged the government contract to get 100,000 Android $35-tablet PCs ready by January 10, 2011.

In a Live Mint report, further proof of India's $35-tablet plan was revealed. The 9-inch Android touchscreen tablet, dubbed Sakshat, is far from a gimmick, as Kapil Sibal, India's HRD Minister, showcased the$35 Android-powered tablet earlier last month, reinforcing its viability as an educational tool for schools and universities.

HCL Technologies is now set to manufacture 100,000 units of the $35-tablet PC by January 10. Indian government will purchase the touchscreen Android tablets and hand them over to IIT-Rajasthan for "intensive laboratory and field tests across the country." Upon successful testing of the touchscreen tablet, Indian government will buy 1 million units in the first phase of the $35-tablet PC project.

Students and educational institutes are expected to get the $35-tablet to use later in the year -- university students will get the touchscreen Android tablet PC by July, reports claim. This price is much lesser than the OLPC project, which approached the government to purchase inexpensive computers for $100.
The Sakshat $35-tablet is believed to have an 8.9-inch by 7-inch touchscreen and weighs 1.5-kg. The tablet will run on Android OS, will have a front-facing web camera, 2GB of RAM, 3G and Wi-Fi support, 2 USB ports, and slots for microSD and SIM cards.
